Let’s Achieve Administrative Simplification Together!

By Shana Olshan, Director, National Standards Group, Office of Enterprise Information, CMS
The goal of Administrative Simplification is “to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the health care system.” We have heard concerns about the value of the Health Plan Identifier (HPID) in today’s health care environment from across the industry, including the National Committee on Vital and Health Statistics (NCVHS), an advisory body to the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS).
To more formally gather feedback about HPID, HHS published a request for information (RFI) on May 29, 2015. It is important that we hear from all perspectives as we consider adjustments to HPID policy. Therefore, I personally invite representatives of all areas of the health care industry to share your views with HHS.
The RFI specifically solicits comments on the following:
  • The enumeration structure outlined in the HPID final rule
  • The use of both the HPID and Payer ID in electronic transactions
  • How evolving trends in health care have changed views about the function of the HPID
With the information provided during the HPID RFI 60-day comment period, HHS will:
  • Explore how current HPID policy affects the health care industry
  • Determine whether policy changes may be warranted
Public comments in response to the request for HPID RFI are due by July 28, 2015.
You can submit comments electronically, by regular mail, by express or overnight mail, or by hand or courier. Electronic submission is encouraged.
